West Seattle Herald – Soup for the Season

I’m a dabbler. I have dabbled. Particularly in food writing. I enjoy it. I really enjoy it. You might already know; you are reading my food blog. Two months ago I purchased Will Write for Food. I am a sucker for “how-to” books, especially how-to books with a subject that makes me salivate. I didn’t think I could do it. I couldn’t be a food writer, I’m not an expert, I don’t know what I’m doing. I needed to tell my Negative Nellie to shut up! I enjoy food; I enjoy creating food; I enjoy sharing the experience of food; I enjoy writing about food. And that, my friends, was reason enough for me to take some sort of giant leap in the direction of this so-called dream of mine (not completely defined, but that’s ok).

I was half way through my book and a dozen blog posts in when I decided to take a little jump. I wrote a few pitch letters with the idea of building soup from whatever the heck you have in your pantry. I expanded even further. I pitched my idea to the West Seattle Herald and said, “Hey, I can make soup from whatever I find fresh at the West Seattle Farmers Market.” They said, “Sounds great! Can’t wait to see the finished piece.”

I went to the farmers market and I sought out in-season ingredients and I came up with this surprisingly delicious soup. I wrote the recipe, I wrote the article, and I took the photographs. I submitted the words and pictures to the Herald and they posted it on westseattleherald.com, on the home page… for an entire 24 hours! It was not Bon Appetit, Sunset Magazine, or Food & Wine, but it was mine, for a moment. A reason to keep on doing exactly what I’m doing: mixing, baking, making, writing, photographing, experiencing, sharing, inspiring.

    Congrats on the article, it’s awesome! You’re an excellent writer, your passion for food really comes across… you make cooking approachable, something to embrace and enjoy instead of fear. I say that because while I like cooking, I generally fear it. I’m one of those recipe-people who must follow the recipe to the LAST LETTER, OMG THEY DID NOT TELL ME HOW LONG TO SAUTE THIS, IS IT DONE ENOUGH, ALL IS LOST. (I have issues, I know.) Anyway, you inspire me to get over my drama-queen self.

    Woo Hoo! I know that I already congratulated you, but I wanted to do so AGAIN! You are really making it happen and you’re such an inspiration! I LOVE it! I didn’t know if you’d be interested, but one of my cooking magazines was highlighting using local foods. A book reccommended is Local Flavors by Deborah Madison. It focuses and vegetables and farmers’ market. I thought you might be interested! :)
